The first open heart surgery in Perm was carried out on November 13, 1995 by professor  S.G.Sukhanov together with Israel cardiac surgeons in the department of cardiac anesthesiology and reanimation of Perm regional clinical hospital awarded with “Sign of Honor”.

On the initiative of professor S.G.Sukhanov and with the support of the Perm region governor Igumnov G.V. in March 1999 the independent medical establishment was formed: Perm regional hospital № 2 “Center of Cardiovascular Surgery”, subsequently reorganized into Perm regional clinical hospital № 2 “Heart Institute”. In February 2005 on the base of Perm Heart Institute the Perm branch of Bakoulev Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Moscow) is organized.

Organization of Perm Heart Institute under the leadership of professor S.G.Sukhanov played the determining role in providing high rates of cardiac surgery development in the West Urals and made it possible in short period to get foremost positions among the analogous medical establishments of Russia.

Today “Heart Institute” is the contemporary scientific research, therapeutic consultative complex. It provides qualitative and effective rendering of medical services to citizens in the sphere of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, based on the best traditions of scientific schools, close connection with the fundamental and applied science, using high innovation medical technologies.
